Most American Muslims Are Satisfied Obama backers...

By Andrew Stern CHICAGO | Tue Aug 30, 2011 12:13am EDT (Reuters) – A majority of U.S. Muslims are content with the nation’s direction in contrast to many Americans and few Muslims believe there is support for Islamic extremism here, a survey released on Tuesday found. With the 10th anniversary of the al Qaeda attacks on New York and the Pentagon approaching, the Pew Research Center found that most Muslims felt ordinary Americans were friendly or neutral toward them. In contrast to the majority of the general public dissatisfied with the nation’s direction, 56 percent of the estimated 2.75 million American Muslims said they are satisfied, the survey showed. Seven out of 10 view...

Seven Muslim Americans on Ballot in Suburban Chicago...

April 04, 2011 Kane Farabaugh | Chicago, Illinois When it started last year, the non-profit group Project Mobilize, or Project M, hoped to change the political landscape in suburban Chicago by promoting Muslim Americans as election candidates.  So far, there are no Muslim Americans serving as elected officials in the Chicago area.  But Project M hopes that will change in municipal elections April 5. In the countdown to election day, Maha Hasan is making a final push to get out the vote. She is running for a position as a trustee with the Justice Public Library.  Justice is a Chicago suburb. “The demographics have significantly changed.  You see a lot more Polish immigrants coming in.  You see a...

More Muslim Americans on Ballot in Chicago...

February 19, 2011 Kane Farabaugh | Chicago Much of the attention on Chicago’s local elections February 22 is focused on the race for mayor.  Former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel and former Senator Carol Moseley Braun lead a list of candidates seeking the office currently held by Mayor Richard Daley.  But in those same elections, an increased number of Muslim American candidates also are seeking positions on Chicago’s city council. Ahmed Khan is running for alderman (city council member) in Chicago’s 50th Ward. He is the son of Indian immigrants and knows many neighborhood people from working at his parent’s grocery store. “We talk about grassroots politics, and grass roots activism,” said Khan.  “But I think...

Muslim Americans Urge Community Members to Vote in Upcoming Election...

October 29, 2010 Kane Farabaugh | Chicago, Illinois Representatives Keith Ellison from Minnesota and Andre Carson from Indiana are currently the only Muslim American members of Congress. But they represent a growing segment of the U.S. population that is often in the spotlight as a result of racial profiling and religious intolerance. In an effort to seek better representation in Washington, many Muslim American communities across the country are organizing voting drives to ensure those that can vote, have their voices heard in the upcoming midtern elections. It is a cool and unusually windy evening in the suburban Chicago community of Bridgeview. Not far from the local mosque, which towers over the homes in this predominately Muslim-American neighborhood,...

9/11 Widow Turns From Tragedy to Helping Afghan Women...

September 07, 2010 Faiza Elmasry | Washington, DC The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks brought about many changes in American society. The government established a new department to deal with terrorist threats. Airports instituted tough new security rules. Public awareness of Islam and Muslim countries grew and – in many cases – so did distrust and hate. But one woman whose life was turned upside down on September 11th turned that personal tragedy into healing and hope for women half a world away. Terrible loss Susan Retik Ger doesn’t like to remember September 11, 2001. Her husband was on American Airlines Flight 11 when hijackers seized control and flew it into the World Trade Center. “My husband, David,...

Muslim Chaplain Delivers Prayer for US House of Representatives...

March 03, 2010 A Muslim chaplain has delivered the opening prayer for the U.S. House of Representatives, an honor few Muslim clergy get. Abdullah Antepli of Duke University in North Carolina served as a guest chaplain Wednesday, at the invitation of Representative David Price, a North Carolina Democrat. He prayed for God to guide members of Congress and enable them to serve citizens of the country and all humanity, regardless of gender, ethnicity or religion. Duke University says Antepli, who was born in Turkey, is only one of a few full-time Muslim chaplains at U.S. colleges and universities. It says his work focuses on religious leadership for Duke’s Muslim community, pastoral care and counseling for people of any...
