American Eagle Debuted a Denim Hijab and a Somali Refugee to Model It

American Eagle has been seriously stepping up its inclusivity game as of late. Not only did the brand ban the use of Photoshop and retouching from its latest ads following huge successes with similar initiatives for its sister site, Aerie, but the retailer is now joining the likes of Nike with the release of its first-ever hijab.

And not just any hijab — this one looks just like denim. The Dark Indigo Hijab ($20) is crafted from a lightweight lyocell or viscose, according to American Eagle’s online shop, and its mission is to inspire girls the world over to show their style while maintaining their beliefs with slogans such as, “wear it your way,” and “make it as original as you are.”

Whats more, the retail giant cast 19-year-old Halima Aden, a Somali refugee-turned-model (who recently walked in Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 5 runway show and also modeled a hijab on the cover of Allure) to debut the headscarf, and it’s safe to say she was more than a little excited.

“Thank you @americaneagle for encouraging young America to follow their passions, express their individuality, and pursue their unique paths. #Ican movement,” the Somali-American beauty wrote on Instagram. The retailer was equally complimentary, posting a video of Aden showing her new headwear on the streets of NYC. “Talk about inspiring!” they wrote. @kinglimaa went from Somali refugee to one of the industry’s most sought after models, competing in the 2016 Miss Minnesota USA pageant in a burkini and hijab.”

She’s not the only one who’s loving her new look: The denim hijab is getting plenty of praise around the Internet.
