Study: Radicalized Muslims Have Little Actual Knowledge Of Islam

Extremists and Islamophobes alike have attempted to paint violent factions within Islam as the true expression of the faith. But a new study gives credence to what countless Muslim leaders, activists and scholars have argued: that groups like the self-proclaimed Islamic State are Muslim in name alone. A group of German scholars at the Universities of Bielefeld and Osnabrück analyzed 5,757 WhatsApp messages found on a phone seized by police following a terrorist attack in the spring of 2016. The messages were exchanged among 12 young men involved in the attack. The attack itself was not identified in the report. Deutsche Welle noted that the timeframe suggested it may...

Boxing Champ Launches Sports Hijab

A boxing champion from the East End has created a sports hijab to help more Muslim women get into combat sports. Ruqsana Begum (below) – who is the current British female Atomweight Muay Thai boxing champion – runs personal training sessions and women-only sessions in the sport at the Osmani Centre in Whitechapel. She said: “I came up with the idea during the Olympics. I was interested in the story of an American athlete who was told she couldn’t compete wearing her hijab due to health and safety reasons, so her father created one that was approved for her to fight in. “I thought if they can create one...

Is Islamic Law an Answer for Humanitarians?...

Is Islamic Law an Answer for Humanitarians?

DUBAI, 24 April 2014 (IRIN) – Humanitarian action today is largely taking place in Muslim-majority countries where some combatants turn to Islamic law, among other sources, to guide their military behaviour. As a result, in the last decade, aid and advocacy agencies have increasingly tried to understand Islamic law in order to use its humanitarian provisions as tools of negotiation with armed groups in the Muslim world. This is particularly helpful in engaging Islamist armed groups, some of whom reject international humanitarian law (IHL). Some aid agencies try to situate their arguments for access or protection of civilians within a religious context, sometimes using scholars, mullahs or other religious...

Catholics, Muslims Pursue Dialogue Amid Mideast Tension

By Tom Heneghan, Religion Editor BETHANY BEYOND THE JORDAN, Jordan | Fri Nov 25, 2011 1:36pm EST (Reuters) – Only five years ago, critical remarks by Pope Benedict about Islam sparked off violent protests in several Muslim countries. Never very good, relations between the world’s two largest religions sank to new lows in modern times. This week, while protesters in the Arab world were demanding democracy and civil rights, Catholics and Muslims met along the Jordan River for frank and friendly talks about their differences and how to get beyond their misunderstandings. The Catholic-Muslim Forum, which grew out of the tensions following Benedict’s speech in the German city of Regensburg, was overshadowed by events...

Exhibit Showcases Islamic Gift-Giving Tradition

November 23, 2011 Greg Flakus | Houston, Texas Islam has spread to cultures and regions far beyond its birthplace on the Arabian peninsula. Among its traditions is the value placed on gift giving These gifts, from over the centuries, are works of art which often bear motifs associated with Islam. That Muslim tradition of gift giving is the focus of an exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. The theme of the exhibit, which bears works ranging from the 8th to the 19th centuries, is in its title: “Gifts of the Sultan: The Art of Giving at the Islamic Courts.” Curator Francesca Leoni says every piece on display reflects that concept. “This exhibition uses gift exchange...

Islamic Center Hosts Free Clinic

Anissa Tanweer Arizona Daily Star | Posted: Thursday, November 10, 2011 12:00 am Carla Lewis had never been in a mosque before and she wasn’t sure what to expect. “Because I’m a Christian, and you hear all this propaganda that if you’re not Muslim, you’re their enemy,” she said. Still, she entered, a little confused for a moment about where to go and how to behave until someone showed up to assist her. “Are you here for the clinic? Let me show you the way,” someone offered. Lewis, a 47-year-old truck driver, said her private health insurance lapsed in April after she took a leave of absence to care for her ill child. She needed a physical exam...

Future Development of Mecca Aims to Fit heritage

By Asma Alsharif MECCA, Saudi Arabia | Wed Nov 9, 2011 5:35am EST (Reuters) – Future development in the Muslim sacred city of Mecca will be more in tune with traditional architecture, the mayor says, but for now residents worry that Islam’s holiest sites are disappearing behind skyscrapers. The historic city, the birthplace of Islam, is studded with dozens of yellow and red cranes and metal scaffolding aimed at increasing hotel space and improving facilities to make the annual haj pilgrimage safer and easier. As more than 2.5 million Muslims from across the world flood Mecca’s narrow streets for the annual pilgrimage, however, many visitors and residents point to a government-owned 600-meter...

They circle the Kaaba shrine. They do it again, and again, and again.
