Study: Radicalized Muslims Have Little Actual Knowledge Of Islam

Extremists and Islamophobes alike have attempted to paint violent factions within Islam as the true expression of the faith. But a new study gives credence to what countless Muslim leaders, activists and scholars have argued: that groups like the self-proclaimed Islamic State are Muslim in name alone. A group of German scholars at the Universities of Bielefeld and Osnabrück analyzed 5,757 WhatsApp messages found on a phone seized by police following a terrorist attack in the spring of 2016. The messages were exchanged among 12 young men involved in the attack. The attack itself was not identified in the report. Deutsche Welle noted that the timeframe suggested it may...

Boxing Champ Launches Sports Hijab

A boxing champion from the East End has created a sports hijab to help more Muslim women get into combat sports. Ruqsana Begum (below) – who is the current British female Atomweight Muay Thai boxing champion – runs personal training sessions and women-only sessions in the sport at the Osmani Centre in Whitechapel. She said: “I came up with the idea during the Olympics. I was interested in the story of an American athlete who was told she couldn’t compete wearing her hijab due to health and safety reasons, so her father created one that was approved for her to fight in. “I thought if they can create one...

Is Islamic Law an Answer for Humanitarians?...

Is Islamic Law an Answer for Humanitarians?

DUBAI, 24 April 2014 (IRIN) – Humanitarian action today is largely taking place in Muslim-majority countries where some combatants turn to Islamic law, among other sources, to guide their military behaviour. As a result, in the last decade, aid and advocacy agencies have increasingly tried to understand Islamic law in order to use its humanitarian provisions as tools of negotiation with armed groups in the Muslim world. This is particularly helpful in engaging Islamist armed groups, some of whom reject international humanitarian law (IHL). Some aid agencies try to situate their arguments for access or protection of civilians within a religious context, sometimes using scholars, mullahs or other religious...

Promoting Religious Tolerance: Shehrbano Taseer receives human rights award

Published: October 23, 2011 Pakistani journalist and daughter of former Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer, Shehrbano Taseer, received a Human Rights Award during an annual award dinner in New York City on Saturday. In the months since her father’s slaying, Shehrbano has continued to speak out publicly against discriminatory laws that target religious minorities and encourage extremism, said a press release issued by Human Rights First. Despite criticism and even death threats from militant groups, Shehrbano has worked unremittingly to shed light on the hundreds of victims of Pakistan’s blasphemy laws and to encourage the government to take necessary steps to promote religious tolerance, the press release added. Human Rights First will honour Shehrbano “for her courage in carrying...

Why do Hajj? 5 Questions Answered

About 3 million Muslims from more than 100 countries will pack the city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia, next month for Hajj, the biggest pilgrimage on the planet. What’s it all about? We turned to Brown University Muslim chaplain and CNN iReporter Robert David Coolidge and Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, for a primer: 1. Why do Hajj? According to Islam, every Muslim is expected to make the pilgrimage at least once if they are healthy and can afford to. Some people spend their whole lives saving for the trip, while others return many times for spiritual enlightenment and forgiveness, says Coolidge, who will make his second pilgrimage this year with his wife. “There’s the belief that one’s...

Film Depicts How Paris Mosque Sheltered Jews During WWII

October 14, 2011 Lisa Bryant | Paris A newly released film in France depicts for the first time how the Paris Mosque saved Jews and Muslim resistance fighters during World War II. Troves of books, movies and articles have been released over the years in France describing almost every facet of World War II and the Nazi occupation here. But one historical nugget has been largely overlooked – the role played by Muslims during that dark period of French history. A new movie aims to right the record. Released two weeks ago in cinemas across the country, “Les Homme Libres” – “Free Men” in English – describes how the former rector of the Paris Mosque, Si Kaddour Ben Gabrit, offered...

At Islamic Center, Relief Awlaki Can No Longer ‘Spread Hate’

By Gary Strauss, USA TODAY FALLS CHURCH, Va. – Members of the suburban, Washington D.C., Islamic center where Anwar al-Awlaki once served as Imam condemned his terrorist activities following his death Friday. “Al-Awlaki encouraged impressionable American-Muslims to attack their own country,” said Imam Johari Abdul-Malik, director of outreach for Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center, where a large crowd was worshiping in morning prayer. “(He) will no longer spread his hate speech over the Internet to Muslim youth, provoking them to engage in violence against Americans.” Al-Awlaki was killed by U.S. drone missile strikes in Yemen. His anti-U.S. rhetoric leanings led to his 2002 ouster at the center, where he served as...

Pope Highlights Bond With Muslims

September 23, 2011 Pope Benedict has met with German Muslim leaders and called for Christianity and Islam to grow together in “dialogue and mutual esteem.” He met with several Muslim leaders in Berlin Friday, on the second day of his trip to Germany. The pope stressed the importance of religion in modern society and said he believes there can be a “fruitful collaboration” between Christians and Muslims. On Thursday, Pope Benedict celebrated an open air mass before 70,000 Catholics at Berlin’s historic Olympic Stadium. Earlier in the day, at the start of his first state visit to his native country, the pope addressed the German parliament. He urged politicians not to sacrifice ethics for power, citing Nazi excesses...
