Study: Radicalized Muslims Have Little Actual Knowledge Of Islam

Extremists and Islamophobes alike have attempted to paint violent factions within Islam as the true expression of the faith. But a new study gives credence to what countless Muslim leaders, activists and scholars have argued: that groups like the self-proclaimed Islamic State are Muslim in name alone. A group of German scholars at the Universities of Bielefeld and Osnabrück analyzed 5,757 WhatsApp messages found on a phone seized by police following a terrorist attack in the spring of 2016. The messages were exchanged among 12 young men involved in the attack. The attack itself was not identified in the report. Deutsche Welle noted that the timeframe suggested it may...

Boxing Champ Launches Sports Hijab

A boxing champion from the East End has created a sports hijab to help more Muslim women get into combat sports. Ruqsana Begum (below) – who is the current British female Atomweight Muay Thai boxing champion – runs personal training sessions and women-only sessions in the sport at the Osmani Centre in Whitechapel. She said: “I came up with the idea during the Olympics. I was interested in the story of an American athlete who was told she couldn’t compete wearing her hijab due to health and safety reasons, so her father created one that was approved for her to fight in. “I thought if they can create one...

Is Islamic Law an Answer for Humanitarians?...

Is Islamic Law an Answer for Humanitarians?

DUBAI, 24 April 2014 (IRIN) – Humanitarian action today is largely taking place in Muslim-majority countries where some combatants turn to Islamic law, among other sources, to guide their military behaviour. As a result, in the last decade, aid and advocacy agencies have increasingly tried to understand Islamic law in order to use its humanitarian provisions as tools of negotiation with armed groups in the Muslim world. This is particularly helpful in engaging Islamist armed groups, some of whom reject international humanitarian law (IHL). Some aid agencies try to situate their arguments for access or protection of civilians within a religious context, sometimes using scholars, mullahs or other religious...

American Muslims Identify with US, Islam Equally

August 03, 2011 Suzanne Presto | Washington A research group has conducted hundreds of thousands of interviews since 2008 with Americans of different faiths, in an attempt to explore the political, social and spiritual engagement of Muslim Americans, as well as gauge attitudes toward them. The study was released Tuesday, and it contains some interesting findings. Mohamed Younis, senior analyst at the Abu Dhabi Gallup Center, summed up the findings of the new report titled “Muslim Americans:  Faith, Freedom and the Future.” “Muslim Americans are just that — they’re Americans.  They care a lot about their faith, but they also care a lot about their country,” he said. Younis said that a decade after the September 11 terrorist...

For African-American Muslims, Ramadan Has Special Meaning

As the month of Ramadan begins, many millions of Muslims around the world are joining in a collective fast intended to help purify their souls. But for the more than half a million African-American Muslims, many of whom descend from former slaves, Ramadan has a special meaning – a link between the African-American experience and the Islamic tradition of spiritual freedom. More than 500 African-American Muslims worship at the Masjid Muhammad in Washington, home to the oldest African-American Muslim community in the United States. Talib Shareef, a retired U.S. Air Force veteran, is the new Imam at Masjid Muhammad.  He says the experience of black Muslims in the United States is different from that of most other Muslims....

More Muslim Americans Believe They Are Thriving, Poll Says

By Wendell Marsh WASHINGTON | Tue Aug 2, 2011 11:45am EDT (Reuters) – Muslim Americans are now more optimistic about their lives than any other major American faith group as their economic well-being improves and they feel more politically enfranchised. A Gallup study released on Tuesday found 60 percent of Muslim Americans surveyed reported they were “thriving”, slightly higher than for Americans of any other religion except for Jews, who edged them out of the top spot by one percentage point. Pollsters noted in particular the rapid surge in positive sentiment among Muslim Americans. The percentage of Muslims who were “thriving” grew by 19 points since 2008, double that of any other major faith...

Ramadan Blog Becomes Book on Benefits of Fasting

August 01, 2011 Adam Phillips | New York City The Quran calls on Muslims to refrain from eating, drinking, smoking and sexual intercourse during the daylight hours for the entire month. Muslims are also expected to abstain from eavesdropping, gossip and backbiting while spending time reflecting on God and their faith. In his book “Fasting for Ramadan,” poet and essayist Kazim Ali examines the beauty this ancient practice brings to his life and the relevance it may have for Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Born in London, Kazim Ali was raised in Canada by his Shi’ite Muslim parents and now teaches writing at Oberlin College in Ohio. His relatives consider themselves to be traditional and many of them married...

Most American Muslims Are Satisfied Obama backers

By Andrew Stern CHICAGO | Tue Aug 30, 2011 12:13am EDT (Reuters) – A majority of U.S. Muslims are content with the nation’s direction in contrast to many Americans and few Muslims believe there is support for Islamic extremism here, a survey released on Tuesday found. With the 10th anniversary of the al Qaeda attacks on New York and the Pentagon approaching, the Pew Research Center found that most Muslims felt ordinary Americans were friendly or neutral toward them. In contrast to the majority of the general public dissatisfied with the nation’s direction, 56 percent of the estimated 2.75 million American Muslims said they are satisfied, the survey showed. Seven out of 10 view...

Norway Muslims share nation’s grief and hope for unity

By Mohammed Abbas and Aasa Christine Stoltz OSLO | Tue Jul 26, 2011 3:22pm EDT (Reuters) – As central Oslo reeled from Norway’s worst massacre in modern history, a blond man in the grieving crowd asked Iraqi-born Iman al-Kofi, wearing a headscarf, for a hug. Kofi, who had a friend in intensive care with three bullet wounds and had learned that at least one other friend of Iraqi origin had been killed in Friday’s massacre by an anti-Islamic extremist, obliged, and the man walked back into the crowd without another word. Kofi, 19, and other Muslim immigrants say they would have been treated very differently had the perpetrator of one of the country’s most heinous...

Young Muslim-American Leaders on the Rise

Hina Samnani July 22, 2011 This year marks the tenth anniversary of September 11, and as the tragic date draws closer, some surveys show Americans still remain conflicted over their views on the Muslim world.  The Arab Spring uprisings have raised a positive image of Muslims striving for democratic values, yet events like the “Ground Zero Mosque” controversy and the contentious Peter King hearings only reiterate the fact that a negative spotlight still shines on the followers of the Islamic faith.  But these perceptions have not stopped Muslim Americans, specifically the youth, from taking the initiative to change people’s impressions for the better. An increasing number of Muslim American students are stepping up and are pursuing careers in...
